But, you know what ?  I think this is a topic for IRC, not this forum.

My thoughts exactly.  I thought this forum was to find Pascal solutions to programming problems.

Here is the Pascal solution to IRC problems:
Code: Pascal  [Select][+][-]
  1. begin
  2.   writeln('Goodbye IRC world... I''m out of here');
  3. end.
FPC v3.0.4 and Lazarus 1.8.2 on Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

It is really disappointing how some people here who have never been to irc are so gullible to believe a harassment post from a troll who was mad about being caught doing ban evasion in irc and brought it to the forums.
I have actual screen shots of the conversation with this person and they are nothing like the nonsense in his post.

This is nothing more than another attack on the fpc community. That’s it. Nothing more to it.

Who benefits by making people wrongly attack the moderator of the official irc channel? Please try to have better judgment than an easily provoked bull at a bullfight.

I quickly googled the web, Pascal is not in the top 20 most popular programming languages. I wonder why any social influencer interests in lurking in a channel of a programming language that many people consider dying.

I'm sorry, I am not here to argue. But I want to share my story.

I am not a BASIC user. When I was a teen, I spent almost all my time studying BASIC (and playing video games :). I was capable to write 2D side scrolling and arkanoid-like games, I even wrote an Assembly to .com binary emitter using BASIC. But I haven't used BASIC for more than 20 years so I cannot consider myself a BASIC user anymore.

I am a lurker in many BASIC forums: FreeBASIC, Gambas, BlitzMax, PowerBasic, PureBasic, QB64, Friends of Basic. I visited them several times or at least once in a month. I signed up some of the forums but I rarely make any post. I just enjoy reading people sharing their programming tips.

I may someday use BASIC. I haven't decided which one is the best. FreeBASIC probably is the most feature rich one but the others do have their own interesting features. I visit their forum to learn their progress and to 'test' how friendly their forum is. How friendly the support forum is important to me.

Anybody here use WordPress? WordPress official forum was as good as here. I was an active forum member in WordPress but unfortunately their forum becomes too professional, too many rules, heavily moderated, so I abandon WordPress forum. I still use WordPress.

I am not a BASIC user.
Am I allowed to hang out in their community? Forum? or IRC channel?

I am a lurker in many BASIC forums, posting no more than 1 post in a year.
Should I be banned from the forums?

Moderating a forum heavily can be a bad thing. If you've been a WordPress forum user for many years, you know what I mean.

I do not use IRC, I can only share my experience using forum.

It didn’t used to be this way but things changed because there were some issues with trolling by ops of Linux channel which led to other issues including a troll who will not stop trying to do ban evasion.

The fpc channel actually has quite a few lurkers from before that who are still there. The founder of the Linux channel lurks in fpc since the beginning and has never talked about fpc I’m not sure why he is there.

It’s more of an issue of trying to know who new members to channel are to prevent trouble in the future. I can’t always be online to babysit the channel and I don’t want bad things happening while I’m away.

I've been on chat systems but none for programming languages.

As far as the IRC channel for FPC (and/or Pascal), I have to say that you bring up the subject a bit too often for my taste.  This forum isn't about IRC.

It is quite likely the case that very few of the forum participants here have the information necessary to have a well founded opinion on the situation you described about harassment by a troll and ban evasion.    Your bringing this stuff up here isn't going to solve that problem (if it exists at all.)

I have never been interested in a "chat" like experience for Pascal (or any technical subject) but, after reading everything you've said about it, I'm even less inclined to even have a look, much less participate.

I am also of the opinion (possibly mistaken) that Pascal's future is unlikely to be very dependent on IRC channels.  I think this forum makes a greater contribution to keeping Pascal alive.

I’m not the one who started this flame thread. Preventing a known troll from being in an irc channel has been used as a pretext to disrupt the forum. If more people in forums used irc Maybe they wouldn’t be so easily duped by these ridiculous accusations.

Moderation:

Before this does get into "flames" (I do not consider it the case yet, but potential is building up), I decided to lock the thread.
Also more recent messages have added little or no new value.

Thanks everyone for their contribution.
