Nowadays, I work with SVN to a local server (which backups itself with borg backup to 2 separate remote locations) and also still have an older script which zips (7z) my source-folder to the server, with preservation of several versions, once a day. No change I could accidentally take that version (because it's in 7z).

Yup, I second that approach. And as I've previously remarked, Subversion without http: access is actually rather lightweight.

Check if you some backup software installed which could cause this (or some other file system related tools).
Ezlage mentioned Google drive, check also if you have MS Onedrive or some other similar software.

I was on the right track when I told you to check backup software (and your 'SyncBack' is similar to Onedrive and such, difference is it doesn't backup to the cloud).

I usually create directory named 'backup' and backups are then one way into that directory. I always retrieve them manually.

I think several of us were beginning to suspect that there was some malign daemon involved :-)

I'm more than mystified as to how I could blindly ignore the fact that my Drive W is entitled 'BACKUP'  %)

To be brutally honest, I'd actually all but forgotten that I had SyncBack operational, it just 'works', and I think there have only been two occasion when I've had a need to even look at any backup and none where I've needed to 'restore' anything.

Yes dseligo, SyncBack is 'incremental', only backing up files where the time/date are different.
The major point that I found appealing when I first came across it, is the fact that it doesn't compress the files into a .zip or 'catalogue'; meaning that you can easily find, and indeed recover, any file without recourse to the program or any 3rd party software (other than MS File Manager of course).

It's also unfortunate that Drive T & Drive W just happen to be on the same PC --- it is the only one  of the 10 'profiles' I have set up that that is the case - all the others go to drives on network PCs.

Object Pascal programmers should get rid of their "component fetish" especially with the non-visuals.

Somebody in the UK set up a company with a similar name at roughly the same time.
