[Closed] Question about Names for some color options.
« on: February 14, 2022, 04:50:59 pm »
If you opened the IDE options, and (in the option for the editor) you would find Color-picker (drop-downs) with the following names:
"Main Caret"
"Other Carets"

What would you think they do?

Ideally answer this WITHOUT reading other replies.

I would have no clue as to what "Other Carets" refer to.
I would think that "Main Caret" is just the caret in the IDE (the blinking thing that indicates where I am typing).
Never felt the need to set a color for that though.

Without reading Bart's reply, my answer would have been exactly the same.  Plus I would remark that the word "caret" is not very well known and "blinking thing that indicates where I am typing" should be used as standard  :)

This kind of reminds me of streetsigns i've seen in France at a crossroad:
One streetsign pointing left says "All directions"
The other streetsign pointing right says "other Directions"
Duh?!?
One System to rule them all, One Code to find them,
One IDE to bring them all, and to the Framework bind them,
in the Land of Redmond, where the Windows lie
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Code is like a joke: If you have to explain it, it's bad

I would think main caret refers to the usual editor caret, and other carets refers to the use of multiple carets (which functionality I use very often, thank you so much for implementing this, Martin, I expect it  represents hours of careful  work).
I echo the remark about the rarity of the word "caret" in general English usage. While caret is technically correct, I think "cursor" would be much more readily understood by newcomers.

From where I sit, caret is usually the ^ symbol but its also used in place of the word cursor. I personally recognized its use immediately. So, its not that confusing IMHO. And just a touch better than TBTTIWIAT

main caret = the blinking cursor in the editor
other carets = other cursors (eg arrow) otherwise no idea.

Hi!

Other carets:

Maybe for multi-line editing in synedit!?

If the main caret is the editor caret, change it to editor caret. Other carets maybe are simply in any place like search box of the object inspector for example.

Thanks.

The feedback on the word "caret" itself was a bit of a surprise. While aware of the extra meanings, I did not consider that the association with
   "Currently Active Revised Edit Target"
would be anything less than immediate.

As for "Others", that was the bit I wanted to test, in order to see how many would associate it with the "multi-caret" mode of the editor.

Thanks to all.
