[Closed] Is it possible to install and use on Lazarus RAMDISK?
« on: December 26, 2021, 10:42:02 am »
Hi All,
Is it possible to install and use Lazarus on Ramdisk?
If possible, how can it be done?
Anyone using it this way?
If you have knowledge and share it, I would be very grateful.

If Ide=Lazarus 2.0.10 32 Bit and Os=Win 10 Home 64 Bit then Get up and do something useful! Because God is the helper of those who start again;

I have this done with Softperfekt RAMDisk on Win10/64. The Ramdisk must be able to Save and Restore its Content. And it must be able to hold the same Driveletter. So i have no Problem to create a 8GB ramdrive. Activate the save at shutdown and restore at startup of my PC. After this i install the fpc/Lazarus with fpcupdeluxe on this drive. It is very fast, if yoz recompile fpc or lazarus  :) ANd if you make a great mistake, you can make it fast undone, by reloading the ramdisk without saving. I use it, if i make experiments with fpc or lazarus or both.

BTW: My system have 32 GB Ram, so i have no Problem with a 8GB drive

Thaks for you reply af0815,
This answer has been like a lighthouse in dark waters for me.
One last question You are probably using ssd !
What is the difference in compilation speed and time between the two?
Is this difference worth going from SSD to RAMDISK?
If Ide=Lazarus 2.0.10 32 Bit and Os=Win 10 Home 64 Bit then Get up and do something useful! Because God is the helper of those who start again;

I suspect not. I use a three year old laptop with an ssd and 16G ram and can do a "cleanup and build" based on GTK2 and my 20,000 line project in about 13 seconds. Normally, a "build" happens so quickly that I am unaware of how long it takes. I'd prefer to keep the ram available for the compiler.  But its worth mentioning that if you do go the ram disk way, just installing Lazarus in the ramdisk, built directly from source, would need a lot less than the 8G that af0815 buts aside. My lazarus-main only 1.3G so might be worth experimenting with, say, 2G ? (that would not get the FP RTL into ram of course). Just a thought ...

I have a full bloated installation with a lot of components from OPM and with crosscompiling abilities two targets with the needed libs. This need some room more :-) And i hate to low storagespace.

The speed of compiling with SSD is high and RAM more higher, but i cost a lot of time to restore and save the state of the Ramdisk at startup. It is the darkside of the Ramdisk :-)

Actual i have suspended th e use of the ramdisk, because the time at startup and shutdown is more boring than the compiling time  :o

As I wrote above;
Your experiences are like a lighthouse, keeping me from going into adventurous waters right now.
Thank you very much for this. Respects.

Saving the ramdisk to an SSD should be reasonably quick.  Have you tried that ?
FPC v3.0.4 and Lazarus 1.8.2 on Windows 7 64bit.

Indeed, but compiling on a SSD is also quick. Actual i have changed to a new PC of the last generation of SSD (and more RAM 32GB). The speed of the SSD I/O System is so fast, this was the reason why i have deactivated the RAMDisk actual.
