Perhaps the title of this thread should really be "why are some Linux distributions so far behind on Lazarus"

Or for that matter "Why are Debian derivatives so far behind on just about everything?".

However, the malformed Lazarus package with the version issue was far more serious.

One workaround for all this would be to persuade the distreaux to actually ship FPCUpDeluxe, in the same way that Debian ships an installer for things like Google Earth rather than the actual binary.

On the option to build from source, I agree, more information was needed, and the wiki was not helpful in that regard, either.
* The wiki link you were shown has several highlighted blocks.
* It mentioned that Lazarus and FPC are different products, it specifically says you should be using FPC3.2.0 in 2020 and has a link to another page, even more up to date, that mentions 3.2.2. Using 3.0.4 now when it was plainly out of date two years ago seems an interesting move.
* Mentions the need to resolve dependencies.
* Also mentions that 'trunk' or 'main' might be considered 'brave'.

I am definitely not saying that the wiki is complete or totally authoritative but does, at present, provide enough info to get you started if you read it.  Its a wiki after all.

Main is really for people with a fair bit of background and does, sometimes, have problems. Like now, Bookmarks in the IDE don't work on the default Linux GTK2. Personally, I routinely now work with Lazarus 2.2.0rc2 because I use the the Bookmark feature a lot.

EDIT: I have edited the wiki page to make these issues clearer. And attached an image of what it said before this edit.
