"Unable to read the project info file"

I get the following error when attempting to open an .lpi file

"D:\Sofware\Lazarus\Fractals\FFW.lpi"
In 'stream:' (line 1 pos 1): Invalid #0 character
--- End quote ---

Perhaps this error is related to the age of the project that I am trying to open (four years old), but I would expect that Lazarus is backwards compatible.
Either way, any idea how to fix this?

Turned out it was a Windows 10 problem.
The project files are residing on OneDrive and the cloud link was somehow broken. When the link was restored, the project loaded fine.
