Easter
« on: April 02, 2021, 12:21:44 pm »
Happy Easter to everybody!

I put here pictures of my spring tree felling activities although it has nothing to do with Lazarus.

Most of the snow is gone. 2 weeks ago there was plenty of it.
Sawing was finished before birds nest. Piling branches and splitting the blogs can be done anytime later.

We haven't seen snow around here (Madrid, Spain) since the end of the Filomena storm. As for felling trees ... I don't know what the police would say to that, nevermind walking on the street with a motor-saw  :D

Hello.

Here in Fuerteventura, Canary Island Spain, we must go high in the mountains to see sometime snow and if somebody cut a tree, he will not have problem with police but he will be placed directly in a madhouse.

In Guyana (my country of origin) on Easter Day, everyone forgets about Free Pascal and Lazarus for the day and they all go off to the beaches and open areas to fly kites https://www.guyanastandard.com/2020/04/13/people-celebrating-easter-differently-amid-covid-19-lockdown/! :)

Greetings from the UK (Southern England). Signs of flowers since early February, generally a mild Spring but we had a couple of bitter days/nights (<-5C).

I always try to do any cutting by Valentine's Day (14th February) since tradition has it that that's when the birds do their courting. These days it's only light snipping by the side of paths.

We're past the Equinox, past the Full Moon, today is the Friday after the Full Moon, so in a couple of days we have Easter. Rejoice and be glad hallelujah! :-)

And the workers will be demanding their Bank Holidays and their foreign trips, COVID lockdown or not :-(

Easter greetings from Montreal where there would normally be far much more snow on the ground than the little bit there is...

Went to turn over the leaves compost today, but it's still frozen.  Picked up branches and such and that's about it for early yard work.  SO can't wait to plant the garden - she has seedlings growing indoor.

I took the first batch of paprika seedlings (~3000 SHU) to the greenhouse a couple of days ago after sprouting on a heated pad on a windowsill. Blackthorn/sloe (small bitter plumb) coming into flower, just seen the first swift (getting earlier every year).

The recent warm weather caused cherries to bloom, but for mid next week frost in the night has been predicted, which could ruin it. The cold is not good for the pollinators (bumble(bees)) either.

Last year a similar frost ruined all cherry's fruit till 1.5m height.

Incidentally, committed nerds might find this book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendrical_Calculations interesting.

Unfortunately all of the maths in it is Lisp... I've never explored how easily a compatible implementation coild be embedded in an FPC program (or for that matter in anything else).

Hi!

The algorithm:

Take the spring equinox.

Take the next fullmoon.

Take the next sunday.

That ist easter sunday.

And here some old Delphi stuff derived from the formula from
CF Gauß:

Code: Pascal  [Select][+][-]
  1. FUNCTION Easter(aYear: WORD): TDateTime;
  2. VAR
  3.   A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N: INTEGER;
  4.   vDay, vMonth: WORD;
  5. BEGIN
  6.   A := aYear MOD 19;
  7.   B := aYear DIV 100;
  8.   C := aYear MOD 100;
  9.
  10.   D := B DIV 4;
  11.   E := B MOD 4;
  12.
  13.   F := (B + 8) DIV 25;
  14.   G := (B - F + 1) DIV 3;
  15.   H := (19 * A + B - D - G + 15) MOD 30;
  16.   I := C DIV 4;
  17.   J := C MOD 4;
  18.   K := (32 + 2 * E + 2 * I - H - J) MOD 7;
  19.   L := (A + 11 * H + 22 * K) DIV 451;
  20.   M := (H + K - 7 * L + 114) DIV 31;
  21.   N := (H + K - 7 * L + 114) MOD 31;
  22.
  23.   vDay := N + 1;
  24.   IF M = 3 THEN vMonth := 3 ELSE vMonth := 4;
  25.   Result := EncodeDate(aYear, vMonth, vDay);
  26. END;

The algorithm:

If you looked at the book- or even the Wp page I cited- you'd discover that it ranges far more widely than the simple Computus (which in isolation. once understood, isn't particularly interesting).

Oh boy, this is so international.
I confess I had to check the exact location of Guyana from a map.
I don't remember many news from Guyana or its neighbor Suriname. It is good of course because international news are typically about bad things.
I guess the climate is nice there.

Filomena storm, yes. I saw pics and videos of it! Both north-America and Europe had record cold weathers.
Actually sun's activity and changes in the Golf-stream have predicted a colder period. I personally like warmth more than cold, but unfortunately it is not getting warmer.

Anyway, fortunately felling trees is not considered a crazy act here, at least if you do it for your own trees.
Otherwise myself, my neighbors, and actually most people in countryside would be carried to loony bin.
My small forest grows more wood than I can burn in a fireplace. Wood is abundant here.

A professional lumberjack worked a full day for my neighbor.
He had a Stihl MS 500i motor saw, the world's first saw with a fuel injection motor. Wow!
 https://www.stihl.com/STIHL-power-tools-A-great-range/Chainsaws/Petrol-chainsaws-for-forestry/287735-131/MS-500i.aspx
I got inspired to cut more trees, too.
I underestimated the wind and was careless with one. There was a hazardous situation but finally nothing bad happened.
The tree fell to the "wrong" side where wind pushed it :
 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wlkp_EfOKYCM23rHO0pa2K0i2VMz872V/view?usp=sharing
You see it had split before falling, presumably kicking strongly upwards. A kind of "barber chair" situation.
It was not a big tree but still weights ~600..700kg.
I decided to improve my equipment. A jack for pushing a tree is handy. I want a bigger saw with a longer blade for felling. There are used professional saws for a good price available. :)

This is very much out of topic in FPC / Lazarus forum, but I am happy to tell more in private mails etc. in case somebody is interested.
Mostly Lazarus trunk and FPC 3.2 on Manjaro Linux 64-bit.
