Contemporary (?) Literature on (Free) Object Pascal
« on: August 26, 2020, 09:22:07 pm »
Dear members of the forum,

I am a newborn in the realm of Object Pascal. So, I would like to have your kind contribution of the topic of the subject:

I am looking for a (few) contemporary book(s) on (Free) Object Pascal. My background on programming comprises of the fundamentals of the C language, and a partial (rather "working") knowledge of the Mathematica (R) language.

Any suggestion, idea, comment is more than welcome.

Thank you all in advance.

Greetings and welcome to the forums!

The newest thing that I'm personally aware of is Object Pascal Handbook - Marco Cantu - BerlinVersion

There was a time when you could sign up with Embarcadero and they would send you a free copy, but I don't know where that page is anymore.  I found the page, but I'm unsure if it still works or not.  It's located here http://forms.embarcadero.com/ObjectPascalHandbookbyMarcoCantu

Hope that helps!  :D

And again, welcome!
macOS, Linux, FreeBSD and sometimes OpenIndiana.

Hi!

Look at the end of this (long) article:

https://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,51093.msg374697.html#msg374697

There are three PDFs to download.

Be warned that the newest version uses some features that FreePascal does not yet supports or fully supports (e.g. Anonymous methods, Extend RTTI, TMonitor)
OTOH FreePascal has many features that Delphi does not support and so are not mentioned by Marco Cantu.
Specialize a type, not a var.

Yes, sorry.  I was in a time crunch when posting and neglected to add a disclaimer about that.  Still, his book can be very helpful in a general sense...

I agree, Marco Cantu is an excellent author, but I would advise to look for a slightly older edition.
That would prevent confusion for starters. (e.g. FPC is close to 100% compatible with Delphi 2007. As is Lazarus code)

Hey everyone,

can someone help me where to find an older edition than the one from Marco Cantu? And also which one do you think is the best to really get deep into the materia?
