Wiki main Page: Specialised Search Engines
« on: November 30, 2019, 12:21:29 am »
This whole paragraph on the Wiki Main page:

Quote
Specialized Search Engines

There are some outstanding search and knowledge bases online that can be a great help for learning new techniques and solving problems. Tamarack Associates operates a fast search engine specifically for the Borland usenet archives. Mer Systems Inc. provides a similar search engine. Another outstanding source of information along with a sitewide search capability is Earl F. Glynn's Computer Lab and Reference Library.

is now dead (dead links, missing content). Someone with higher privileges than me needs to attend to its removal or trawl the Internet Archive for the dead links/content.

I've been trying to attract Wiki Admin or Bureaucrat attention since November 2019 - I've posted various issues (incl image db errors) on the Wiki Feedback page and a couple of Wiki Admin and Bureaucrat talk pages with no result.

Is there actually any active Wiki Admins or Bureaucrats?

Do you mean librarians? It should be anybody there.  Anyway, the wiki is something that was not updated for a long time.  I even suspect that software should be updated too.

The Wiki is updated pretty frequently -- by 28 different users in the last 30 days. See: https://wiki.freepascal.org/Special:ActiveUsers

The problem is that the Main page is "protected" and cannot be updated by just any user but requires an Admin or Bureaucrat to do it. There are 9 Admins and 5 Bureaucrats.

Additionally, there is a longstanding bug in MediaWiki which requires the manual running of a script to update the category links and this can only be done by someone with command line access to the machine on which the Wiki is running.

I think the best place to find them is on lazarus mailing list.
Would you like to become one (Bureaucrat or Admin)?

Yes, however the forum is mostly an end-user to end-user resource. So the relevant people may not hang out here. The mailing list usually is a good place, if a question to the team goes unanswered here.

Sometimes someone pings the relevant person. The wiki admin is so rarely needed, that probably no one knew whom to notify. In fact, I wasn't even aware (I forgot) I had the privilege...

I removed the dead links.

Edit: the various localized main pages may still have the links. But they seem not to be protected...

I think server maintainer (shell access) is someone from the FPC team. Not 100% sure myself.

Thanks for updating the main page Martin.

I would have assumed that one of the 9 Wiki Admins would check the Wiki Feedback page occasionally over the course of 2 1/2 months if they were active. Jonas fixed the links once last year for me (by manually running the script I managed to identify to fix the category issue).

It's not that I expect the Wiki Admins to be as hyperactive as I've been recently, it's just that with 9 of them, I expected someone would check the feedback page.

Anyway, thanks again for your time.

I do not know who set it up / put it into the page text.... Nor who watches it. If you do not have it on your personal watch list, then you do not see when it was changed.

My guess: Most of the admins, probably needed the privilege once, so they do not do regular admin work (well there probably is not much "regular" work).
