Design time cannot type in text areas and object inspector characters double

OS: Kubuntu 18.04, using Mate desktop (I know, why?)
Lazarus: 1.8 - version in software repository
FPC: 3.0.4 - version in repository

After installing everything and starting Lazarus, when I place a component (TEdit or any other component) on a form, I can't type text in the component during design time, and when I type text in a text field in the object-inspector, the characters are double:

I tried completely removing lazarus/fpc once, including all config files, .xml, etc. that I could find and then re-installed. No changes after the redo.

Can anyone suggest anything to solve this problem?
