Will there be a Lazarus Cocoa IDE with next release?
« on: July 16, 2019, 02:47:30 pm »
As we all know, Apple is skipping the support for Carbon and 32 Bit applications in its new OS version Catalina.

The last Lazarus release came with a Carbon IDE which will not be able to run in Catalina.

So, my question: Are there plans to publish a Cocoa IDE?

The IDE should already be compilable with the Cocoa widgetset.

So I guess the next major release for MacOS will be Cocoa-ready (hopefully  :-\).

(Not sure how ready/stable the widget-set itself is)

Sounding good!

Otherwise it would not be possible to install Lazarus on a Mac.

Regarding the discussions here, the Cocoa widgetset made great steps forward in the last months, so I hope so, too.

There's Qt alternative.

There's Qt alternative.

Of course. I just meant, would it actually make more sense to bundle that for release than the Cocoa IDE, which AFAIK is now working quite well overall?

BTW: there seems to be almost no screenshots of the Cocoa IDE in action anywhere (that I can find at least.) Might be good for anyone out there using it to add some to the wiki / e.t.c. if they have a chance to do so.

There's little to no difference between Cocoa and Carbon IDE in its appearance. (the difference might be seen in "labels" as Cocoa and Carbon are picking up different system fonts).

Having "dark theme" Cocoa screenshots could help prove that IDE is Mojave ready.

I very much hope that the next release will have a Cocoa IDE, but I manage for now by using the trunk version. It seems quite stable, and fixes are made fairly often.

I use the stable releases on Lin and Win, which are my secondary development platforms that I run on VirtualBox. It is too much trouble, for me at least, to run trunk on all platforms.
