Only Pascal has a real real type.... ;D >:( with a silly bit count... >:D

Note that Pascal's Real type is implementation defined, both in Wirth and Jensen's report and in the ISO standard. The 48 bits real is specific to Borland's Pascal.

Note also that 48 bits has an interesting characteristic: it is a multiple of both 16 (thus 8 ) and 12 bits, which makes it cover the then most used computer architectures. ;)
