Does anyone ever check the example projects even compile?

I've just been looking and a large number don't compile (at least on linux)
How are we supposed to learn if the documentation is poor and the example
projects don't work?

Which version are you using? I checked all examples before the release of Laz 1.8.0 on Windows, and I think Juha did the same on Linux.

Checking a hundred sample projects really is no fun. So, if you find something which is not working in the current release or in trunk please file a specific bug report, and it will be fixed. It will not be fixed, however, if users are lamenting about poor documentation and non-working examples in a general way.

I guess what OP mean is when running the examples (Tools > Example Projects) on Linux will cause compilation error. Because those files are in the unwritable folder.

At least the FPC documentation examples should always compile.
Note that very rarely an example hides under the radar because of new language features or implementation changes that may break compatibility. But that is rare and you mention many....
I guess you may follow up on Handoko's remark and copy the examples to another directory and set the proper access rights.
