Is there a methodology of finding every place a class or method is used?

Sometimes  "Find identifier references" is greyed out.
Then you can select the identifier and invoke Find in files (Search-> Find in Files, default hotkey: shift ctrl F) and choose the appropriate options (probably "whole words only" and "search all files in project", but you'll also select other options as needed).

Edit: It seems to be selecting the entire word that disables some menu items. If the word is unselected, but the cursor is within the word, then the context menu gives you the full variety of functions.
