How to treat dropped database connection

I'm using TPQConnection but this case repeats with other database components too.
When the network fails for any reason, the database connection got broken and the application freezes (permanent).
Is there any way to control the timeout of the connection?
I have already tried "connectionTimeout" in the params property of the connection with no success.

How you treat your app in this case?
