Just as a follow up, I have the code running well on both Linux and Windows now.

There's still room to optimise the Field of View code but it runs well even with several dumb enemies on screen. I ended up reverting to using OnKeyDown for movement as it allows turn by turn movement better than using a Timer in this instance.
