I have been away from Lazarus for about 6 months and was wondering if the database compoonets (MySQL or PostgreSQL)have improved? Mainly can I access either of these db's with Data Aware components?

Yes. You can access MySQL and most probably PostgreSQL. The last one I've never used.
But why do not you just download latest version and try for yourself?
