Lazarus Database HOWTO ?
« on: February 24, 2004, 01:51:59 am »
Does anyone know where I can find a guide on how to create/use a database using Lazarus. I notice that the current release has a TDatasource component & Data Controls. I'm used to using Delphi with a Paradox database & the BDE - & I'm trying to move onto Linux.
I'd be very grateful for any tips or pointers anyone can give me ... (is it best to MySQL, or Interbase or what ??).

Being the author of tdbf, tdbf.sf.net, I am currently trying to port that component. It is very alike TTable, it works with dBase files. The CVS version should compile into lazarus nicely, but I can use testers and feedback :-).

Couple of questions:

1. How does it compare to Topaz? I use Topaz with great success but would love something that is Lazarus friendly.   :D

2. Where is the web site? I found various references to http://www.tdbf.net but that doesn't seem to exist.

All that site does is point to the sourceforge page. I thought there was an actual web site that talked about the product and what it actually is and what it does. It appears that there used to be one but it doesn't seem to be valid any more.

Hmm, there was. www.tdbf.net was a link to it, but it appears to be taken down. I never was the website administrator and had no control. I am a webbuilder-newbie anyway, so I didn't mind. I'll try to reach the former author/webadmin and see if I can copy his website to SF.

Try downloading the tdbf documentation pdf. It contains a feature list and a function reference. I agree: it leaves much to be desired ;).

Topaz isn't open source but it is not expensive. I have used it on several projects and it worked real nice.

I know it's some time since you posted this query, but we now have started a tutorial on interfacing Lazarus to MySQL (and, I hope, eventually to other database engines).  You can find it here:

http://lazarus-ccr.sourceforge.net/index.php?wiki=LazarusDatabase

Hope this helps.
