Whats the best linux distro to use with Lazarus?
« on: September 22, 2005, 05:37:25 am »
Hi
I'm looking for a good linux distro to use with Lazaurs. Or maybe if someone knows of a live CD with Lazaurs on it.

Thanks
Clark

Don't know about "best" but Gentoo works very well. Once you get past the somewhat complicated install procedure, its a distro thats easy to live with and keep updated (no re-installing whole system for new distro version releases), and no dependency hell issues. The advantages more than outweigh any disadvantages for me.

Thanks for the response.

I am kinda new to Linux. I installed Gento a while back before I was looking into Lazarus. I switched to Kubuntu because it found my wireless card. I hear Gentoo has a project for an installer, I should see how that project is going.

One of the best things about Gentoo is the forums: http://forums.gentoo.org/, great participation. If you have any kind of wireless config problems, doing a search or posting a question on the forums will most likely solve it for you. They haven't let me down yet.

It's irrelevant. I've used Lazarus with several distributions. No difference. Why should there be any difference? Just go with the distro you're most comfortable with.

I think Lazarus works in all Linux distributions in same way.
I recommend k-demar, http://www.k-demar.org , not only for Lazarus, it's very useful and friendly user.

I failed to install Lazarus on Mandriva 2007. It complained about some missing library which I don't remember right now! :|

I have it installed here on Mandriva 2007. About the missing libraries, that will happen on any distribution. You just need to install them. That should be very easy using the packaging system of your distribution.

For Mandriva, use urpmi and to configure it google for "easy urpmi"

Thx for your comment. My experience with Mandriva 2007 was a total failure. Problem started with gdk-pixbuf dependency. I checked system libraries and it seems that all gdk-pixbuf related libs are loaded.  I tried to install gdk-pixbuf rpms from rpm-seek but with each new package a new chain of dependencies  started until I found myself lost in a endless hell of broken dependencies!

That's normal. I also had lot's of trouble when I started using Linux. I think all distributions should show, right after you install them, a very big screen with simple instructions about how to use the OS talking about the most basic tasks to be done with it.

I have no idea why after so many years they still don't do that. The user that never used it before becomes completely lost.

If you still want to know how to install the dependencies on Mandriva 2007, it's very simple:

1 - Google for easy urpmi

2 - Go to the easy urpmi using the link you found doing <1> and configure your urpmi. Configure a main and a contrib repositories. You don't need the rest. The website will give all other instructions you need.

3 - To install any package you ever need, open a terminal, type su to change to root and type:

urpmi <package name>

In the case of lazarus you would be doing that with the pixbuf packages

Hi Sekel,

After a long time I had enough time to sit and install Lazarus on Mandriva. I went through all steps you recommended and hopefully could install and run Lazarus on Mandriva. The interesting thing is that after installing urpmi, Lazarus installer managed to find all required packages itself without a need to run urpmi manually!  Actually, it was very exciting for me to run a Pascal IDE on Linux long after Kylix. Press F9 and your executable binary is ready :)

Thanks for help.

Choosing a distro is more difficult than what I though, I have changed several before making my decision. I agree that Lazarus will work fine on all distro's,

The installation is hard sometimes on some distro's you have installation tools, like on SuSE, there you can use the installation Program, on other distro's you need to write everything in a console (very hard for newbies), on Slax for example you only need to add a file (module .mo), but the functionality is always the same (AFAIK).

Lazarus preinstalled in VMWare
« Reply #13 on: December 06, 2007, 05:55:24 pm »
I have set up Lazarus on Debian and Mandriva under VMWare. If anyone has 100's of gigs of bandwidth on their web server and would like to host these files (around 500mb each, give or take a couple 100mb) then I will provide them to you.  All one would have to do to get a working Lazarus under Linux for testing purposes is to get the free VMWare player and the virtual machine files.
