Best linux to develop Lazarus?

I am discovering Ubuntu is not really very developer friendly and it seems more focused toward the desktop user.

What do you consider is my best bet to develop in Linux? There are so many distros out there.

I don't think that there is one best, it's more a matter of personal taste. I like Mandriva Linux the most.

I havent a clue myself (just having installed Debian, like hours ago) .

Is Gentoo worth the extra effort in Lazarus picture?

Not really. The only real benefit of Gentoo is the big amount of packages (but Debian has almost as many). The Gentoo ebuild system allows defining and configuring the sources in a flexible way.
A female geek (yes!) in our engineering school claimed that Gentoo is the only distro flexible enough for her. She has many distros around but they restrict her too much.
I haven't noticed that myself but maybe I am just not geeky enough. Years ago I tried to install Gentoo but failed which kind of proves it.

Lately I have used Sabayon which is basically a precompiled Gentoo but has very different properties. It is easy to install and use, works "out of the box".
You still can use Gentoo ebuilds when you need them. Highly recommended!
The only minus comes from a poor support of some hardware configurations.

I don't see any big problem with Ubuntu / Kubuntu either, although I think it is over-hyped. Good documentation is the best part of Ubuntu. It is important of course.

I personally use and recommend Archlinux. http://archlinux.org

It has all the benefits of Gentoo (fast, lean and mean :-) but not its handicaps (very long compilation times, the need to micromanage everything)
Like Gentoo, Arch has a rolling release model, it has a very nice wiki and  very friendly and resourceful forums.  Its official repos have more than 8000 packages, and its user contributed package database AUR (most of them are very well maintained) has nearly 20000 packages.

It is really faster than Ubuntu, configurable totally by only a few scripts and very developer friendly.

Its been several months since Lazarus 0.9.30 stable has been release and nobody has updated the Ubuntu repository for it. Its a big hassle to manually install it. You need to install a lot of development packages. Sudo is a pain, clearly not meant to be used so regularly because like I said Ubuntu is geared to the desktop user.

I tried Puppy Linux yesterday, and it is not well supported by Virtualbox.

I am going to give ArchLinux a try.

I am two month on Chakra-Project. It is Arch+KDE4 distribution. Its installer, Tribe, is written in Lazarus.

My mistake, it is not Tribe, it is another installer (probably related to their Live-CD).
