TMemDataset component problem with creating dataset file

Lazarus 9.8 -  memds component ,  Linux Mandriva LE 2005
There is TMemDataset component available in Lazarus. I am able to place the component
on the form and the Datasource component but I am unable to create the MemTable File
set the Fields definitions etc.  Is there some information how to do this?   How to create the dataset ?  Create Dataset from the menu doesn't work.

 The message is “The component editor of class TMemDatasetEditor invoked with verb #0 “ Create dataset has created the error: Access violation”

This component is potentially very useful..  if only I could make it work ;(
