SimpleCompressor available.
« on: March 21, 2011, 03:10:46 pm »
I have put together a modified version of the makemesmall utility that Marien van Westen made available in 2006.

Called SimpleCompressor it has been compiled for Windows as a 32 bit application and with Linux as a 32bit application.

The Windows version comes as a source code zip or an installable app also wrapped in a zip package.

The Linux version comes as a source code tar.gz or a tar.gz package that contains the executable and the strip and upx utilities.

I have been able with a copy of the the utility to compress it from 19.5MB down to 1MB, so hopefully you also will be able to make good use of it too.

SimpleCompressor is available from http://www.wibblytim.co.uk/compress.html

Feedback will be most welcome. It works fine on my computer but ....

I do not have access to a Mac so don't know whether it will be useful to Apple users.

I just installed the windows version.

I was thinking, let's see if it's better than strip (maybe strip could have missed some debug tags i don't know ^^).

Once i installed it, i just noticed the strip.exe and upx.exe.

So, what's the point in making a tool that just call other tools? IMHO, none.
I'm using Arch Linux.

Easy way to do things quickly. I've built a UPX wrapper because I (used to) often need to compress executables in different directories, where between them, some files must be left uncompressed. Using UPX command line utility, I'll have to execute it a couple of times manually. With my GUI, I can do it easily by drag-dropping, unset some checkboxes, and a single button click. As a bonus (when it's implemented) I can do the compression in multithreaded manner which makes things run faster.

I have decided to bring Lazarus to my software company as the main developement tool. Tools like this help us to automatize process and reduce overall time. Thanks!

Thank you for your comments.

As I originally posted SimpleCompressor is just that: Simple.

If you find it useful then that's the important thing.

I have now compiled a Linux 64bit version and it is available on my website.

This has been compiled with 64 bit Lazarus on Slackware 13.1 64bit.

Please post any comments if you use it, especially if there is a problem. I have tested it but...

Tim.

mrpostiga, thank you for your comments. They seem to me to be an improvement over the current app. I will look into implementing them as soon as possible.
