Don't you think that LAZARUS sounds and feels a bit odd and ugly. What about something more beautyfull (that would sound better, too) ? It's usually easier to change name at project start rather than at the full dev....

Project start??????

The Lazarus project is about 5 years old.

Maybe it is just new to you but it has been in development for years.

For your information:
A "finished" softwareproject is a dead one, all software needs constantly mainainance and improvments, based on the fact that the systems, as in both hardware and operating-systems allways will change and a pice of software that will hang on to this will have to at least adapt so that it will fit and meet new requirements, and allso when we think of it`s competition it has to constant evolution, if not, it will soon be overtaken by newer and bgetter software, and will soon be forgotten, so finished, well that`s NOT an option (however, I do know what you wanted to say :) )

When it comes to the name Lazarus, I find it very suitable for this project, especially when we think of the background for the project (the dead medigo, correct ?) , and on who Lasarus in the bible was, and all that story (NO, I`m not even a tiny bit religious, never has been, and never will be, but respect those who are)

Lazarus is a rather cool name, and in the last year or two that I have been lurking in the shadows, and following this project I have discovered that the project name pops up in more and more places, I know of schools that use it in their classes, and I know of great projects, that never would have seen it`s first binarys without Lazarus so I think that Lazarus, both the name and the project is here to stay, it has past the point of no return, and if nothing very strange happens, it just can`t die, but that is only "YAPTO" - Yeat Another Proof That the Opensource-philsosphy works.  :D

Thanx fellows, you do magic typing, thats so cool that it`s wasome!

Sorry 4 the book, and bad english

If you don't like the Lazarus name then play Blair Witch, go to Church or read the Bible, even an atheist likes the Lazarus being resurected from the dead storry, it gives us hope that we don't die forever like pushing the power button of a PC and that the Medigo project didn't die but will be even better than commercial (verry good) tools like Delphi. So i think Lazarus is a good name and you probably won't find one better. Lazarus+FPC make a verry good team and will be the best developing tool ever made.
But tell me if i'm wrong.

Never mind the cultural reference, the name itself doesn't really sound professional in any way. There is a reason why big projects have a code name, but the real name is decided and voted for.

I like the name of your project.

In the origin the name of the man was Lazar (aramaic/hebrew) not Lazarus. Aramaic is my native language. Lazarus is the greek articulation.

So in my opinion the name is ok. Keep it up:)

Kind regards

fatg do you think Delphi is a "professional" name ?
It's more like dolphin :) but that doesn't mean it's not nice.
Maybe Visual C++ sounds more professional but the M$ is what realy powers it.
Visual OP, OBJP or OP++ would be more commercially suited, OpenSource projects have all kinds of names
and most a nature-inspired logo(I realy like the Lazarus one).

Delphi actually comes from ancient greek mythology hence the statue figurehead of a greek goddess in Delphi's splash screen. So lazarus relates to a famous ancient mythological dead person who came alive again - I see nothing worng with that (and I suspect more people know the story of Lazarus than Delphi).

Anyhow, Lazarus is now too established to warrant a name change.

ok, I don't really mind the name, what I mean is, compared to plenty other programs, when you speak "Lazarus" out loud, it just isn't it :)

For example, delphi is a strong word, starts with a strong accent on 'de-' and firmly ends with -i (short ee), while lazarus is kinda long and full of '_a'-syllables, and it ends in an '-us' sound which takes the edge away. Like the name itself doesnt know how is it all gonna end - is it gonna be another '-za' syllable, or perhaps '-va'? or maybe another syllable after '-us'? If you see what I mean :) I am being silly, but i think i proved my point. Besides, the cultural reference was pointed out a few times; I don't think a name is any better in that perspective, just because many days ago someone/something called whatever did something very cool and all, it doesn't change the 'quality' of the name imo. And it's not the case of me not liking Lazarus, just the name itself.

Don't really like the MS visual whatever somenumber kind of names, but some names just sound prettier :) i like names like 3d max, maya, firefox, those sort of things, but lazarus doesn't fit in the group ;)

I know this is probably silly but when I try to explain what it is, I say it's   Visual Pascal++ and they understand immediately.

see?  silly!

But in the end I am not a fan of the name lazarus either.  It just doesn't seem like any thought went into the name.  The meaning and where it comes from is one thing, but the effect it has when someone hears it is something else.  Large software companies do put research into this and opensource software usually doesn't unless there is backing.  Yes, it is a marketing issue which shouldn't be ignored by OSS.

I'm a newb here and haven't done any work (yet I hope) on the project so I know I have no say really.  I'm on my first big project with lazarus so we'll see.

cheers
