Title: Site updated
Post by: Marc on June 16, 2011, 03:21:48 am
Hi, as you may have noted, the Lazarus site has been updated to latest SMF and TinyPortal versions. Not everything is installed yet, we're working on that.

So far, it loads MUCH faster.
Looks nice.

Suggestion: increase the font size of the "From Lazarus subversion" slightly?

The list or recent topics on the right pane seems to be gone.
Can we have it back?

Also, IMHO the page header should be more compact --
right now it uses up too much vertical space.

did you collapse it  ? the white v on the top right
Title: Re: Site updated
Post by: de_jean_7777 on June 16, 2011, 09:24:36 am
The site looks great, and is a lot faster. I was playing around, and accessing the articles functionality in my profile (profile->tinyportal->articles) would always give an error (e.g. "Fatal error: Function name must be a string in /usr/local/www/sites/smf/Sources/TPmodules.php on line 1120"). Not all that important currently, I just wanted to note it here.

EDIT:
I've failed to notice at first (facepalm myself) :
Not everything is installed yet, we're working on that.
But I guess this is the reason for the articles error.

also for me there is too much vertical spaces, between profile foto and menu there is like 50 pixels that can be gracefully reduced to like 10 px, look at this fast photoshop (total 78px saved):

Title: Re: Site updated
Post by: Ocye on June 16, 2011, 10:26:33 am
Good work, as far as it's done. IMHO, the top area has a little bit too much space.

PS: And I feel some distraction. "Feel" means that I, maybe, have to adopt the new design. Perhaps it helps to gray out parts. I would have more remarks, eg. I'm always need to check buttons function by tooltip, i.e. icons are not intuitive, but these are all related to usability.

PPS: Just found the ^ to minimize top are  :-X

Well, it seems faster than before, but I'm not really convinced by the new colorscheme and layout.
There is less color contrast between the elements than before, and I find it harder to distinguish the individual topics in a list.

But it'll grow on me, no doubt.

Nice work. looks really good. One thing however: No text on the right side of the avatar picture seems to be quite a waste of screen space. Similarly, can the size of the images be limited to a smaller size.

I guess you need to get used to it before you find it readable.

I think that the top panel could take less space. For example, under and above the menu, there is too much space.

I think also that colorscheme needs adjust (more contrast? ).
Also too much free space at the top (even if Hello User is collapsed).
And too much spam (but it seems that spammers still didn't find my published e-mail here  :) ).

I just found something I don't like with this new site. I don't like the way pascal code appears in the messages.

Before it looked like a white notebook with keywords in different colours from statements. Now everything looks like a dull mauve colour.  :( Makes it difficult to read the code.

Can we go back to the old pascal code format please?

On the old forum we had a custom mod package with captcha and verification questions. I couldn't find an updated package, till I realized that that package was a backport of the features of this newer version. I've enabled them now.

You can go to: "Profile"/"Account Settings"
Then: "Modify Profile"/"Look and Layout"
there you will be able to change your Forum theme:

Current Theme:    Forum or Board Default (change)

there ain't much to choose from, but you can find old "Core Theme" among a few other...

Nice smooth color scheme.
Readability has gone down the drain, textblocks are now far too small (see example with Firefox on Ubuntu 11.04; author names are apparently very important...).
The 'Show Unread' page is now cluttered with text so the actual items are hard to recognize/read.

'Started by' is now below the topic title which is what makes it slightly less clear (IIRC the old version had the starter in a separate column).
But it's nice Web two-oh -ish  :)

Sorry for the noise, it is probably related to my browser, Opera. I just tried with Rekonq and there it works.
On the demo-site I linked above (where it worked with Opera) is also SMF 2.0 but I don't know exact version of packages.

The 3rd party announcements are indeed gone. They are configured, but don't show up. Te recentbar is removed form the frontpage. All other pages have it. The pascal code is known. See explanation in this thread.

In my case, user image is only smaller than was in previous version of forum but its proportions are correct. Try to resize / save the image again in other image editor and upload again, maybe it will help.

I found it. The user panel is part of TinyPortal. To be able to show "usefull" avatars they limit the width to 45px. Your browser should scale the image proportional. Since your browser doesn't, it shows weird.

Anyway, we only allow 64x64px avatars, so I removed that (style) restriction of 45px

It should be OK now.

But I found the topic lists (like Unread Topics) to be too condensed text, basically it would be cool if there was more distinction between the posts title and the info line.

It used to be so, but now it does not show..It's not being visible at the entry point into the forum, will prevent many from accessing it, I believe.
What do you mean by entry point? Clicking on the forum button at the top of the page?
If I do that I can see the Programming / General in the list... No problems as far as I can tell.

From http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/
I click [Forum]
and it takes me to this page: http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=forum

In there I see only:

Team
Third party
Editor
Designer
Debugger
Options
General (Any questions on using the IDE that don't fit in one of the other topics)
Linux
Windows (32/64)
Mac OS X
PDAs and Smartphones
General (None platform specific problems or suggestions with regards to getting Lazarus installed and running)
IDE/Code Tools
LCL
Translations
Jobs
Other

The same happens when I click on a shortcut I had since joining the forum.

I am on Windows XP running Firefox 5.0

I wonder how that could be, if you all can see the General/Programming subsection.

I don't see Programming/General.  I can only access it by going through my own posts that I had on that section.

Thanks.

Just a suggestion - maybe it will work; Each category is separated by a gray band (on my system) on the right side of the band is a caption 'Unread Posts' ; to the right of that is a small button - clicking this collapses or expands the topic group.  Maybe you inadvertently clicked this as some time.  Just a thought.

Hi, Fleshman.

Thanks for helping, but I just checked your suggestion and that does not seem to be it.

It's strange.

A couple of days ago, the section SHOWED, and I thought it had been fixed..But day after till now, it is back to where I can't see that section. Just the ones I carefully listed.

Hello everybody.
The right panel, Recent, gives a list of last posts but, in my opinion, the list is too short (10 posts) and i do not have find the way to see less recent posts...
Thanks

You reminded me my older request:
http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,13327.0.html (http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,13327.0.html)
Now, you can get full list of recent posts on the main page of forum - at the bottom (in Forum Stats).

Thank you, Marc.
However, I think that more useful would be if we could get the list of recently changed topics instead (same appearance that we can get for recent unread topics (http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0), but not filtered to unread). Could you provide such view?
Actually we have it now on right side of the forum, but limited to ten topics. Could we have a link which gives us full list?
Title: [SOLVED] Not seeing General/Programming section
Post by: Elmug on July 15, 2011, 07:30:52 am
Still NOT RESOLVED, but here's some interesting thing I found:

I went to another computer and I do see what I consider "normal", which is what I was getting initially as far as the sections that appear upon entering the forum. I e-mailed me that web address. I went to this computer that I use, opened the e-mail and clicked on the address and THEN the usual sections appear.

However, upon using that link, I am not recognized by the forum, so I had to sign in.

But as soon as I sign in, THEN the sections DO NOT APPEAR, and I have the same problem described in original post.

So I trace the problem, and it relates to cookie of Firefox Windows XP.

I delete cookies and Saved Password (by Firefox).

So I open the forum again, I am not signed in, and I see all the sections.

And AGAIN, as soon as I am signed in, I can not see the sections.

So the issue is surely that THE FORUM restricts me from seeing those sections in the initial menu, and there's NOTHING (apparently that I can do here). So the problem is not FireFox nor my setup.

However, when signed in, I can see OWN POSTS, and via them, I can get to the General-Programming questions.

So, HOW can that restriction of the forum be removed? Can I remove it?

I don't recall doing anything that could relate to what's happening.

Thanks if anyone could help clear this out.

@elmug:
on the top right you have 3 [ - ]/[ + ] buttons. With those you van collapse, expand panels to the left right and bottom. If you are not logged in you get the default view. When you are logged in you get the view as you choose the last time. So if you have collapsed a panel, it will stay collapsed on all PCs unless you expand it again.

@zoran:
this forum is 3rd party software. Adding an existing link is not a big deal, just adding a php line at certain location. Changing (coded) layout or adding different logic, means a lot of php changes to the existing forum software. To be able to upgrade in the future, I try to keep the changes as minimal as possible. The change of the header removed already a lot of existing code. Besides this, I'm a pascal programmer and not a PHP writer.

To make things a bit more complicated, this site consists of 2 combined packages, where some functionality is presented by the forum software (the list of recent topics) while other parts are presented by the portal software (the panels left and right).

So unless there is a link to the "requested" layout,  there is a little chance of getting it changed (unless someone provides a patch)

I understand completely, I was hoping that such a link might exist already, so that you can simply put it somewhere on the forum layout.

Thank you.

Marc,

THANK YOU very much with your reply, have [SOLVED] it now.

SOLVED....I had, inadvertently somehow CLOSED the Programming Section from view.

Opened it by clicking on the still showing heading called "Programming" wile logged in, then closed the browser, and now the Programming-Section of the Forum always appears open.

I also have password saved by FireFox, and set at the forum login to always keep me logged in.

It's all great now.

Thanks everyone.
Title: A suggestion on forum page
Post by: Elmug on July 15, 2011, 06:20:36 pm
I had recently a problem where I could not see the General-Programming list of posts.

I believe now that what caused my problem is that in the Header for ALL sections of the forum, there is a Legend for "Unread Posts" and very close to its right is a little square [] where one can click onto.

Now, those two items ("Unread Posts) and the [] clickable SQUARE are so close that I most likely cliked on te [] thinking that it was to take me to the Unread Posts, but all it did was collapse the view out of the Programming Section.

So maybe "Unread Posts" moved further to the left, from the [-] square would avoid this happening to others. I now see that all Section Headers are alike.

That way it'd be much less likely that one click on the [-] when one rather wants to see the Unread Posts.

Actually though, the functionality and design of this forum is, to me,  one of the best i've used.

Thanks for considering.

Just a little annoyance.

If, after reading messages, I click on "Mark all messages as read" one used to then end up at the index page of the forum.
Lately however, I either end up at http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php (http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php) (the main "home" page) or http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=forum (http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=forum) (the forum index). It seems rather unpredictable where I'll end up at.
I prefer ending up at the forum index page...

You press "mark all read" on a "show unread" page or on a (sub) forum page ?

I can't try that right now (it would mark all my messages read). I'll do later with a different account.

If I press "Mark all read" on a "Show unread" page http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=unread (http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php?action=unread) it brings me to same "Show unread" page with "No unread topics found since your last visit.
