Free Pascal / Lazarus community on Google+ is about to close
« on: October 09, 2018, 08:05:34 am »
Google announced recently, that it will discontinue Google+ in the next months. Thus our little Free Pascal / Lazarus community on Google+ will unfortunately be closed, too.

I know that the majority of Free Pascal users is very active and helpful in this forum. But nevertheless I'm reasoning if it would be worth the effort, to migrate the Google+ community to another open and federated network.

What the forum lacks (in my opinion) is the usability and the opportunity to get a quick impression what is going on in the world of Free Pascal / Lazarus development. I really like the way how the community stream in Google+ works.

What is your opinion on that? Would you have a look at another community or are you satisfied with one forum? It would like to point out, that such a community should be just an addition to the forums (like the Google+ community was), not a replacement (which it never could be).

Thanks for your thoughts :)

It is very convenient to exchange views and discuss problems online. This will not replace the forum, but there is also a niche. More informal communication and lively response. For example, there is a community https:/?/freepascal_en in telegram

personally I'd never link my phone number to any online accounts including viber, telegram and the likes. just a heads up.

Well information about the account phone is closed from outsiders. Telegram protects personal information. And you can not for example write to a person by phone number, if it is not in his personal phone contacts. Telegram is located more safely than Whatsapp or Viber. But I heard You.

I do not question the safety of the thing I just have enormous confidence in the creativity of hackers.

I also don't think that Telegram is a good example of open and federated software. If there is interest in such a community, I want to avoid what happened to Google+, thus a federated network such as friendi.ca, Mastodon or Diaspora would be my first choice. Maybe there are other good candidates that I'm not aware of?

But I [for example] not heard about such services. [By the way client side of telegram OpenSource] After all, popularity is also an important factor. But I will not argue. Probably a fully open (as well as convenient and popular) platform would be a good choice

I think that telegram is a good place for online chats. Of course it will not replace the g+. But it has the benefits.

The interest in continueing the community is rather low - I'm a bit sad of this, but this is how the community decided.

I don't think that any closed services like Facebook, Telegram etc. are in any way better than Google+. It would be worth the effort to create a federated / distributed community, but currently none of the existing users are interested in this. So I think this forum is fine.
