I want to share my experience, which I think maybe similar to the OP's case.
I used Lazarus 1.8.2 on Ubuntu 17.10, everything was working correctly. But after I upgraded it to Lazarus 1.8.4 and Ubuntu 18.04, I can't rebuilt my Lazarus IDE nor install any component. The error message didn't say anything useful.
Luckily I managed to fix it. This problem happened because of several connected problems:
- After I upgraded my Ubuntu from 17.10 to 18.04 the NVidia driver wasn't installed properly.
- Because the VGA driver wasn't installed, the OpenGL (Mesa) driver was removed automatically and can't be installed.
- My Lazarus had LazOpenGLContext package installed previously, it depends on Mesa driver. So it failed if I rebuilt the IDE or installed any component, because it can't find the Mesa driver. But if I compiled project that doesn't require OpenGL, it worked without problem.
How I fixed it?
I solved the VGA driver and reinstalled the Mesa driver.
So for anybody who read this post and has similar issue, you can try:
Make sure the third party libraries that requires by the components installed on your IDE, already installed properly. You may need to remove all the non-default components and rebuild the IDE. In my case, it is LazOpenGLContext package and libgl1-mesa-dev library. Or maybe you can perform a full Lazarus/FPC removal then reinstall them, so let the system to install any required libraries automatically.
