Tutorials
« on: July 24, 2018, 05:22:40 pm »
My daughter is a Python Programmer but want to move to Lazarus as scripting programs are too slow and memory intensive and basically a step backward if not used for sysadmin.

Is there any known Lazarus tutorial that uses an application as teaching method. Sort of Learn the subject as you do the application with discussions about the implementations in the application, rather than the formal textbook approach ?

There are several tutorials online but  maybe someone already found exactly what I describe above.

Strangely there is no Tutorial section on this site (eg the left list on this page).

thanks

Thank you very much.
That is how Tutorials should be presented.
Just weird that the Lazarus site has no consistent tutorial structure.
Just a lot of stuff.. under tutorials.

All wikis that do not implement/support editorial approval eventually turn into a dumping ground. It's not a problem unique to Lazarus.

I recommend to search for Delphi tutorials, manuals and books especially for the beginners. They are much better organized.  Tutorials don't have to be based on most recent versions as the basic features have not changed.  There are really good ones for Delphi 2, 5, etc.

I'm not blaming Lazarus people at all. Now I'm more comfortable with Lazarus wiki as it contains only the gist. But for beginner, it is not easy to understand. Delphi is paid product anyway, has longer history and been taught for long time in university or at other places.

Well. Don't overlook the manuals.... These are excellent and contain many examples.
As a tutorial there is nothing better than Marco Cantu's free book about object pascal.
(ALL of it also compiles with FPC and Lazarus)
[edit]
I see the latest edition is:
a) not free anymore (well, sort of.. but)
b) uses features that are not compatible with FPC yet.
Still, maybe you can find the free download. Apart from Part III everything applies to FPC.

Specialize a type, not a var.
