https://www.businessinsider.de/2-billion-startup-github-could-be-for-sale-microsoft-2018-5

Normally I don't like open this kind title but github is mostly using for open source projects.
I hope they don't change policy of the site using.

That combination is not necessary fatal: Microsoft is very open to opensource (nowadays).
Specialize a type, not a var.

Hmm. Is this really a bad thing ?

If you are dependent on cloud services, you are usually better of with a big firm, than with a little one that usually starts squeezing the free service on the first hitch in revenues.

And that point was not far. Github hasn't made a profit in a decade (*)

(*) which IMHO makes 2 billion for them somehow overprized.

GitLab is an European alternative:

Edit:
Not European anymore, GitLab is located in US now. :-(

If you are dependent on cloud services, < snip >

This is why I decided, long time ago, to "eat my own dog food" regarding install, configure, run and maintenance the infrastructure I need/want for developing.

Currently, I'm using ISPConfig, Gogs, MantisBT, Jenkins and Seafile in a VPS running Debian which is backed up regularly ( twice a day ) to my home pc . It's not that hard to keep it safe and up and running after you finish the initial setup.

++ for Gogs !!
Gogs itself is hosted on github..... :D :D :o https://github.com/gogs/gogs

 :D :D :D You're right !

Since I need to refresh my infrastructure anyway, I'm considering to switch to gitea.io which is a gogs fork. They already considering for self host ...we would like Gitea's development could be based on a Gitea hosted and github will only a mirror .

Yeah. The 2billion was an earlier valuation when the talks started.

Hmmm Microsoft does not explain really why, do they? Maybe it is because they want to integrate Git into TFS, as Git is more popular. Visual Studio handles Git very well already, but that's separate from TFS. So that people don't need to go outside of Microsoft.

But that's a wider strategy of Microsoft getting control over open source organizations, like the Open Source Foundation.
