IDE: One key press, two characters

Lazarus 1.8, Linux Mint 17.3
This issue suddenly appeared with no obvious cause. When using the IDE I get two characters when I press a key once. For example, If I type X the IDE displays XX. This makes writing source code impossible. Has anyone else experienced this? Perhaps some recently applied software update is contributing?

It is an issue that happens when running Lazarus 1.8.0 on certain Linux. Read more here:
