It does indeed look like a usefull library and there is already a Lazarus example available.

I don't want to use MS Word.

According to the UberPDF website it is only around 1MB added size for the added functionality.

I'm parking this one now, none of the solutions worked "out of box" and I do not have the time to look further into this now, but I'll get back to it when another project has finished.
