I am trying use the BGRAImageButton as a toggle button but I don't know how to detect when the button is down and up.

Any ideas?

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I've added toggle support on git.
https://github.com/bgrabitmap/bgracontrols

Just set 'Toggle' property to True and then you can get/set the state with the 'Pressed' property.

Agreed!

I LOVE the controls by the way. I am using them extensively in my project.  Just amazing.
