I have Windows Vista and 32 bit.
I have Lazarus 1.4.0 and I would like to switch to Lazarus 1.6.0.

Do I have to deinstall Lazarus 1.4.0 first ?
Thank you.

Well, no, you can run several different versions of Lazarus on the same machine, just like with Delphi.
It depends, though, most people would want just one installation. For normal users I guess I can recommend uninstalling the older version at some point.
Object Pascal programmers should get rid of their "component fetish" especially with the non-visuals.

If you want to upgrade, you just install the new one, in the same location you have the old one. (no uninstall needed)
If you have additional packages installed, just rebuild the IDE once after the first start.

But even if you do an uninstall, this will keep your user settings.

In 99.99% of all cases that is fine.
In extremely rare cases, the old preferences you had may not work. If that is the case, install again, and in the insatller choose the checkbox to clear user config.

--------
If you want to keep the old, and have 2 independent installs, that is ok too. The installer has an option for that.

I have installed Lazarus 1.6.0 in the same location where the old Lazarus lay.
The install wizard asked me if I wanted to deinstall the old Lazarus and I said yes.
I was also asked if I wanted to keep my old configuration and I said yes.

Everything flowed smoothly and trouble-free.
Thanks a lot to Thaddy and Martin_fr.
