Delphi compiler team left Embarcadero/Idera
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:46:07 am »
Looks like the last one senior compiler guy has gone - Allen Bauer (like Eli Boling before). He is starting a new position at Google:

Interesting info:

Quote from: Ralf Stocker
How safe is Delphis future? Who is the new Lead Compiler Engineer? Who is the new Chief Scientist?
Quote from: Allen Bauer
There are no plans that I'm aware of to move someone into my old position... All those that I would consider qualified are either already gone or are currently looking elsewhere.

Related initiative "Lets buy Delphi":

IMO Interesting and sad time for whole community.

Well, I knew about Julian Bucknall being an avid amateur actor, some say quite good.
But who was Allen talking to?:
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0013735/

Or was it Chuck after all :)

Btw: from how I know him personally the three times I met him, not close at all, Allen is very good at research, creative, how it can be done, and not so much in bringing something into production. That was simply not his task or interest.
Some things in Delphi ( or FPC, for that matter) would never have happened if he didn't dream them up and gave it a head start.

It seems there is no more room for such a person at Idera. Frankly: STUPID.

[edit]
If you were a CEO and your employees are leaving to Google (or MS or whatever) you would have to ask yourself if you are in the right place, governing the right kind of people, want to make money on the long term.
Borland was once a big hitter, that went astray. Nobody stepped in to put them on the right track once simply stupid management turned them into penny stock. No research, no longevity. Simple.
Cudos to Allen. At least he tried.

Specialize a type, not a var.

This is good news for Lazarus. The more bad things happen to Delphi the better for Lazarus  O:-)

I think that is a bad perspective.
My opinion is that if Delphi loses popularity, all other pascal language projects lose, too.
We are a very small community in comparison with most popular programming languages anyway.
FPC 3.2.2
Lazarus 2.2.4
Debian x86_64, arm

Agree wholeheartedly with you.

Yes, it is bad news. But we should be happy that we have Lazarus and Free Pascal anyway.

Perhaps it is time to invest more (time, money, lifeblood ... ) in FPC.
function GetRandomNumber: integer; // xkcd.com
begin
GetRandomNumber := 4; // chosen by fair dice roll. Guaranteed to be random.
end;

I absolutely agree with dogriz, but please note that dotniet replied in old topic, and after more than a year Delphi still exists...

meanwhile a lot of people gone (FMX team, R&D team, FireDAC guy):

we need to wait some time (few releases?) to see what will happen next. Maybe new Embarcadero business model (intensive outsourcing) will be better for Delphi. Who knows?
