Personally, what would be nice is if a splash screen [something signifying a slow application and needs to keep the end-user busy until everything is running] is simply not needed. Some applications start up so fast, they simply don't need splash screens at all. Lazarus IDE should aspire towards that goal instead.
True! Instant startup, no splash, but what about Help-->About Lazarus?  :D The thread is still valid, but I agree,  the current one is not that bad, besides there are much more important things to implement first.

The Cheetah stays. That is a requirement  >:( >:(
I disagree the cheetah is FPC's logo and although it is a big part of the lazarus logo it does not need to be unless of course the two project got linked in to one. In any case I aim to please so here is x2nie's splash with the cheetah added.
Good judgement is the result of experience … Experience is the result of bad judgement.

OS : Windows 7 64 bit
Laz: Lazarus 1.4.4 FPC 2.6.4 i386-win32-win32/win64

So funny I posted it on FPC core :-)

I'm surprised nobody made use of the "Pestering Peacock" subtitle of FPC 3.0 :-)

@marcov
Please also post it on the Lazarus Mailing list...the only thing they talking about lately, is a specific symbol, if you know what I mean. They need to relax, big time!  :D

So, how to replace splash logo in my own copy of Lazarus?

It's very easy.
1. put your splash_logo.png into your_lazarus_install_path\images\  (it will replace the default with yours)
2. run your_lazarus_install_path\images\splash_logo.bat
3. rebuild lazarus: IDE's menu "Tools" > "Build Lazarus with profile : Normal"

taraaaaa! The splash_logo has been replaced with new one.
I do that this morning, successfully.

PS:
If the splash didn't replaced with new one, there maybe conflicting with any other lazarus installation, or the file needed to rebuild doesn't updated.
(because I have several lazarus intallations in my local machine,) I did it this morning:
* rename other lazarus dir to break the path config: from "lazarus_1_4_4" into "Lazarus_1_4_4_temp"
* delete directory Lazarus_1_6_rc1\units\i386-win32\win32
When you were logged in, you can see attachments.
