[Solved] Really basic text characteristics question

I don't want to write YAWordProcessor... but some things I DO want to do might make it seem that I do.

When I use my word processor, I can...

select text (with mouse would be best)
make just certain words(etc) be italic, a different color, etc
do a "search", and find words or phrases within the text

No rocket science there, for a USER.

How do I put such things into something I program for myself?

Despite the "stupidity" of this question, I really do know a bit about Lazarus programming! If someone could point me in the right direction, I can probably RTFM, if only I knew what chapter to look in???

What sort of a component does the text want to be in, in order to allow the programmer to implement such things?

Details not needed... as I said, (I hope) I just need pointing in the right direction....... ?
