Choose a base class for the favorite property "XXXX"

When you are setting property as favourite for a control, a dialog comes up asking Choose a base class for the favorite property "XXXX", and presents a list of types to select from a pick list.

What does it actually mean, and how are the base classes selected?

Are they selected for only the object you are applying it to, or is it done for all the other subclasses of the selected base class?
